Brooklyn Nets wing Sergey Karasev is not likely coming back after a rough season with the team. It’s undetermined as of now, but he may play in Russia next season.

As the Brooklyn Nets look to bring in a new culture next season, one good sign of better times to come was brought forth in an interview this week. Speaking with the Russian media this past week, Sergey Karasev’s father said that his son won’t play for the Nets next season. While he initially showed promise as a first round pick of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Karasev was never able to assert himself as a fan favorite during his time in Brooklyn.

Karasev will be remembered for two things that happened during his tenure with the Nets; First was a big injury during the 2014-15 season in which he tore his MCLl and was out for the rest of the season. This injury came at a rough time, as it was the same season the Nets were looking to go deep into the playoffs, but once again lost in the first round. While not at all his fault, Brooklyn could have used his presence in times when the starters needed a rest.

The second memory for Nets fans comes from this season. During the halfway point of the season, Karasev looked to be traded and blamed then-head coach Lionel Hollins for his lack of playing time. That trade would never wind up coming however, as Hollins was fired mid-season.

Even with the coaching change, Karasev was not able to find much more playing time even with the multitude of different lineups that the team ran with towards the second half of the season. When he was able to get into games, his production left much to be desired and points were overall just hard to come by.

From a fanbase perspective, Nets fans will gladly take just about anyone else to fill Karasev’s role on the roster. He had been here for two seasons, but there will be no goodbye parade for him and most fans will not miss him once the season starts back up in October.

While Karasev’s father thinks his son will be playing in Russia next season, we ill have to wait and see if that actually does happen. If that does end up being the route that Karasev chooses to follow, many teams around the league will be keeping track of him to find out if the move back home helps his career, and to see if it was just the pressure of the NBA that was too much for him.

These are the questions that Karasev, now 22-years old, is facing. He still has more than enough time to tap into the potential that he once displayed, but he may be better off doing that internationally. For now, however, it will be interesting to see what the Nets will do to fill his vacant roster spot.
