On Wednesday morning, it was revealed that the Brooklyn Nets will sign former Phoenix Suns guard Archie Goodwin to a 10-day contract. The combo guard will look to be an instant contributor on the Nets’ roster.

After much confusion on why the Brooklyn Nets were not pulling the trigger on signing a player to fill their open roster spot, they have finally filled the vacancy left from waiving Luis Scola.

According to The Vertical’s Shams Charania, the Nets are taking a chance on another D-League prospect, Archie Goodwin, by signing him to a 10-day deal.

The former Oklahoma City Thunder first-round draft pick and Kentucky product has played four seasons in the NBA thus far. He played three seasons with the Phoenix Suns and three games in his short stint with the New Orleans Pelicans this season.

In 153 career games, Goodwin has averages of 6.2 points, two rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. Last season with Phoenix, in 57 games and 13 starts, Goodwin averaged career highs in many columns: including 8.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in just 19.5 minutes.

The 6-foot-5, 189-pound 22-year-old has been a big part of the Greensboro Swarm, the D-League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets this season. With Greensboro, Goodwin averaged17 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. These are solid numbers, and it will interesting to see how this translates to his time in Brooklyn.

More from Nothin' But Nets

On another note, Goodwin has never seemed to shoot many shots from behind the arc throughout his career, which brings into question exactly what his role will be in Brooklyn, considering we’ve seen the Nets have been very quick to fire from outside this season. We’ve even seen center Brook Lopez develop an instinct from long range, so it will be interesting to see how the Nets use Goodwin. It also will be intriguing to see if Brooklyn will play Goodwin at the small forward position, as we’ve seen them attempt to transform Isaiah Whitehead into a point guard and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson into a power forward throughout this season.

Overall, this is a solid pickup for a Brooklyn Nets team looking to find talent that has been overlooked by taking a chance on players looking to get a shot elsewhere. As we’ve seen with rookies Caris LeVert and Isaiah Whitehead and third-year shooter Joe Harris, the Nets have given similar players chances in Brooklyn, and it seems that signing Goodwin can’t hurt with his prior experience. The fact he is still only 22 years old and can be molded into the Nets culture is also a huge bonus.

Let’s hope Goodwin can give us a preview of what he can do in a black-and-white uniform on Thursday, when the Nets take on the New York Knicks across the bridge in Madison Square Garden.
