James to have surgery on broken foot

An MRI on injured Nets forward Damion James revealed that the rookie broke his foot in his first career start Thursday night against the Dallas Mavericks. James will undergo surgery on Monday. A timetable on his return will be set following the procedure.

“It’s bad news for the kid and for us because he was just starting to come on,” Nets coach Avery Johnson said.

James made his ill-fated start at small forward in place of the struggling Travis Outlaw. Quinton Ross started in James’ place Sunday against the Lakers.
