Preview: Brooklyn Nets vs. Utah Jazz

Tonight, the Brooklyn Nets will start a long road trip in the West with a game against the Jazz, one of the worst teams in the Western Conference. The Nets will be in the West for seven games and they need to play well in order to put themselves in a position to compete for first place in the Atlantic Division at the end of the season. Now, the Nets are four wins below the Toronto Raptors for the division lead.

Utah has Derrick Favors – the young big man that the New Jersey Nets traded to Utah three years ago in exchange for Deron Williams. Most Jazz players are very young – for example, Trey Burke, Enes Kanter, and the best player on the team – Gordan Hayward are all in their early 20s. Hayward’s averages are: 16.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. The Jazz are capable of playing with a lot of energy and the Nets should be focused as they return from All-Star break.

Player Comparisons

Deron Williams vs. Trey Burke. Advantage: Williams

Burke is one of the best rookies this season. He averages 12.5 points and 5.5 assists per game and he will be a good player for a long time. I hope that Deron Williams starts off this second half of the season well. This first game after the All-Star break is very important for him.

Shaun Livingston vs. Gordon Hayward. Advantage: Hayward

Recently, Livingston has not been a consistent contributor. I think Hayward will play well against the Nets tonight.

Joe Johnson vs. Richard Jefferson. Advantage: Johnson

Recently, Johnson has also not been consistent. Jefferson is not a threat to play very well because he is old.

Paul Pierce vs. Marvin Williams. Advantage: Pierce

Recently, Pierce has perhaps been the Nets’ best player. Williams is as old as Pierce and maybe Pierce will play with a lot of energy tonight after a nice break from basketball.

Kevin Garnett vs. Derrick Favors. Advantage: Favors

Favors is young and Garnett is old. However, I do not think Favors is a threat to play very well. In most games, the Nets are undersized and the opposing team can take advantage. Most likely, the Jazz will not be able to take advantage of the Nets’ lack of size because Utah is also undersized.

My prediction is that the Nets will win 95-83. We will watch the game and do a podcast at halftime.
