The Brooklyn Nets Are A Mess

Saying that the Brooklyn Nets are in a state of disarray is an understatement. The Nets have lost eight of their last ten games, trade rumors are swirling around and now their head coach is being “evaluated.” There was high expectations heading into the season that all three stars Joe Johnson, Deron Williams and Brook Lopez would buy into new coach Lionel Hollins system and the Nets would surprise everyone and be a legitimate threat in the Eastern Conference. There was also a fear that injuries would plague the Nets, Hollins hard nosed style would be too much for Lopez and Williams to handle and the Nets would be a lottery team and have their lottery pick swapped with the Hawks. Choice B has happened and it has been worse than anybody expected it to be.

Deron Williams has suffered through injury problems, Williams also lost his job as the starting point guard, Brook Lopez has been replaced as the starting center and management is fearing that coach Hollins message isn’t getting through to his players. Chris Mannix reported earlier that the Nets have “No intention” of firing Hollins despite Espn’s report. If the Nets being this bad didn’t shock you that’s one thing but the Hawks being this good wasn’t expected by anybody and unfortunately for Brooklyn they will be stuck with the Hawks pick in the upcoming draft. The Nets became only the fifth team in NBA history to lose back-to-back games by 35 points or more after losing to the Los Angeles Clippers and Utah Jazz by a combined margin of 74 points. The Nets have fallen off so badly that they aren’t even in control of a playoff spot in a weak Eastern Conference.

The schedule doesn’t get easier anytime soon for the Nets. Inclement weather might have saved them from another embarrassing defeat on Monday as their matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers was postponed until April 6th. On Wednesday the Nets travel to Atlanta to face the best team in the East the Atlanta Hawks, on Friday the Nets host the Atlantic Division leading Toronto Raptors and after that they host the Clippers and travel to Toronto to face the Raptors again.

The bright side is that the Nets have a first round pick this year. The only problem is that the Atlanta Hawks can swap with them and the Hawks are currently the best team in the Eastern Conference so the Nets can go from having a very good pick to having a worse one. The Nets attempt at instantly building a championship caliber team failed miserably and now they are going to have to suffer the consequences. Mikhail Prokhorov’s five year plan failed miserably and now he is looking to sell the team and Joe Johnson, Deron Williams and Brook Lopez are all on the trade block.

The Nets are paying max contracts for Lopez, Johnson and Williams. Williams is hurt, Lopez is coming off of the bench and Joe Johnson is suffering through knee and shoulder tendinitis. One of the Nets most important bench players Mirza Teletovic had multiple blood clots found in his lungs and that required him to be out for the remainder of the season. The only positives for the Nets so far this season has been Mason Plumlee’s emergence into a really good player and Jarrett Jack’s importance to the team. What does the future hold for the Nets? That remains to be seen, however this current situation is not looking good and we will soon find out what the future holds.
