The Brooklyn Nets took until March to finally hit a double-digit win total this season. This isn’t the first time it took this franchise until March to reach double-digit wins. How does this season compare to the dreaded 2009-10 Nets campaign?

Losing is not new to the Brooklyn Nets franchise. In fact, since the team was established more than half of their seasons were losing records. But no season was as bad as 2009-10 for the Nets. At the time, the Nets set a record for most losses in a row to start a season by going 0-18. Since then, the 2015-16 Philadelphia 76ers have tied that record. The Nets went on to finish the season 12-70.

A lot of things have changed for the Nets since then. For one, the team has moved from New Jersey to Brooklyn. Another change has been ownership. And finally, multiple general managers, players, and coaches have come and gone. One piece, however, still remains from that team, and that is Brook Lopez. Lopez has had the blessing (or curse, but let’s stay positive), to play for the team during 2009-10 and this season.

After practice, Greg Logan of NewsDay had a chance to catch up with Lopez. When asked about how the two seasons compare Lopez told Logan, “This has been a completely different mindset and attitude. It is completely different from that situation previously.”

Lopez has a point. In 2010, the team was up for sale and there were questions about if the team would stay in New Jersey. By the end of that season, Mikhail Prokhorov bought the team and started progressing the plans to move it to Brooklyn. Prokhorov also wanted to go big with his five-year plan, so he brought in a new coach and a new general manager that summer.

This season, the team’s focus has been on nothing but development. There have been no side attractions such as who will purchase the team, where they will move to, who the general manager will be, or even who the coach will be. This is a completely different team. The front office has an understanding of what they want to do and are focused on reaching their goal.

Tonight, the Nets take on the Jazz in their 60th game of the season. The same day seven years ago, the Nets played their 60th game of the season. The Nets lost and dropped to 6-54. At 10-49, the Nets have a better record than that 12-70 team and only need three wins to keep them from repeating history. Still, with only 23 games to go, they are running out of time.
