Proof it’s possible for Brooklyn Nets to find talent at pick 27 of the NBA Draft
5. John Block
Drafted: May 11, 1966 by the Los Angeles Lakers
Selecting John Block as one of the all-time greatest selections from pick 27 in NBA History was not an easy decision. Brooklyn native Jamal Tinsley, Kendrick Perkins and DeMarre Carroll also received strong consideration.
Comparing NBA eras is no exact science. Granted when Block entered the league in 1966 there were just 10 NBA franchises, but what set Block apart from the aforementioned players were his statistics.
After Block’s rookie season of which he played sparingly, the league would expand to 12 teams in 1967.
Block was selected by the expansion draft by the San Diego Rockets, who today call Houston home. His career took off. In his first season with the Rockets the 6-9 center averaged 20.2 points-per-game and 11 rebounds-per-game. Block’s teammate with the expansion Rockets? None other than NBA coaching legend Pat Riley.
Back in the early 1970s, every new NBA season brought more teams into the fold and Block’s game continued to blossom.
Block was selected to his first ever all-star game as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1972-73 season. He lasted 10 solid if unspectacular seasons in the NBA, not terrible for a player that lasted till the 27th pick in 1966.
