Raptors/Nets trade

Raptors receive: Justin Hamilton
Nets receive: DeMarre Carroll, 2018 1st round pick, 2018 2nd round pick

Sean Marks hit a home-run with this deal.

Yes, it’s another salary dump, but he managed to get a serviceable player and two draft picks for Justin Hamilton.

DeMarre Carroll, who played his best basketball in Atlanta (with Kenny Atkinson), is anxious to get back to playing ‘team basketball.’ The Raptors offense leans heavily on isolation plays from Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan, which quickly diminished Carroll’s role in Toronto.

While he’s coming off of two injuries that put a damper on his time with the Raptors, Carroll says he feels better than ever.

“This is the healthiest I’ve been in years. I’ve been out in L.A. working with a great group of guys and I worked out even more. It’s the healthiest I’ve been in two years,” said Carroll.

At 30 years-old, he is an established veteran in the league. Whether he begins the year in the starting lineup or on the bench, Carroll will play significant minutes and should be a solid mentor for young players like Caris LeVert and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson.

The biggest part of this trade was receiving two draft picks to take on Carroll’s contract. The first-round pick will come from Toronto, while the second-rounder will come from whoever has a worse record between the Magic and Lakers. The first-round pick is lottery protected, but the Raptors are considered a top-4 team in the Eastern Conference.

Grade: A+

The Nets gave up almost nothing in this trade (Justin Hamilton). In the end, they’ll have DeMarre Carroll, another first-round pick in the 20s, and an early second-round pick. Before this trade, the Nets had no picks in the upcoming draft. Tip your hat to Sean Marks after this one.
