Signing Tyler Zeller

The Brooklyn Nets signed Tyler Zeller just last week to round out its roster. Zeller will serve as a reserve big after playing that role for the Boston Celtics the past few years.

NBA signings in September usually aren’t groundbreaking. While Zeller could become a useful piece for the Nets, he isn’t likely to have a major role.

Zeller’s weakness are easy to exploit in the modern NBA. He isn’t a top athlete and at 7-feet, he is likely to have a tough time guarding small ball-5s.

This isn’t to say Zeller was a bad signing. In fact, there are certain circumstances that can see him become a valuable contributor in the Nets’ rotation.

He is more of a hedge against injuries to Mozgov and Booker or Allen not being able to contribute as a rookie.

Zeller will have to prove himself to receive any meaningful role with the team. He is certainly capable if he plays as well as he did in his first season with Boston or his rookie year with Cleveland. That Cleveland team was in a similar position as the Nets are now.
