Ranking the Brooklyn Nets’ offseason moves
Acquiring Allen Crabbe
The Brooklyn Nets long had interest in acquiring 3-point marksman Allen Crabbe. This offseason they finally got their man.
Last year the Nets shocked the NBA when it signed Crabbe to a four year, $75 million deal for the reserve guard. Portland ultimately matched the deal signed to the restricted free agent.
A year later, after earning just the #8 seed in the Western Conference, the Blazers decided to cut ties with Crabbe. With their luxury tax bill among the league’s highest, Portland decided to sell low on Crabbe.
The Nets were able to swoop in and grab Crabbe and the remaining three years and $56 million left on his deal. Best yet, they were able to shed the deal of Andrew Nicholson. Oh, and Crabbe evened waived his trade kicker to facilitate the deal.
Sounds like a perfect deal for Brooklyn right? Well not quite.
Despite Marks getting good value on Nicholson’s deadweight deal, the Nets may have been able to get more for taking on Crabbe’s deal. The Blazers were in a tough financial situation and clearly wanted to get rid of either Crabbe or Evan Turner.
With that in mind, the Nets should have acquired more assets. Then again, perhaps this was the best deal that Portland would make.
Either way, Crabbe’s deal far outweighs the production he has brought so far. He is, however, a good fit in the Nets’ motion offense. Maybe that will change.
