Ranking the Brooklyn Nets’ offseason moves
Acquiring DeMarre Carroll
DeMarre Carroll could still play basketball at a high level. Injuries marred his time with the Toronto Raptors, but it was clear after he left that he didn’t like how often Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan played isolation hero-ball.
That won’t be a problem with the Nets.
Two years ago, Carroll was 1/5th of the Eastern Conference player of the month in January. He was an integral part of a 60-win Atlanta Hawks team.
Atkinson was one of his coaches. Why can’t that be happen again?
Carroll’s role is undetermined. Atkinson has hinted that he may experiment with lineups. If we see the Nets play REALLY small-ball, with Hollis-Jefferson at the 5-spot, Carroll could potentially start the power forward. Carroll’s injury will likely make it tough for him to guard elite wings. He won’t have as much issues guarding bulky forwards.
The Carroll deal isn’t only a good one because of the acquisition of a two-way combo forward, but they also acquired draft picks. The Toronto Raptors gave up two picks, including their 2018 first rounder, to shed Carroll’s deal. They also took back the unwanted deal of Justin Hamilton.
The Nets got rid of an unwanted deal and got a productive player and two draft picks. This was a home run of a deal, even if Carroll is overpaid.
