Cons: Doesn’t fit Nets’ system

There are numerous cons to the Nets signing Thomas, but possibly the most important is Thomas’ size. As we’ve seen recently, this Nets regime likes big guards. When their smallest player is 6’3″ Jeremy Lin, that says it all.

Many fans also remember when the Nets took a shot on undrafted guard Yogi Ferrell. Ferrell was a fan favorite and similar to Thomas a pure scorer. Both have some similarities in each other’s style of play as well. Obviously Thomas is a top-25 talent when healthy, so it’s a bit different but playstyle-wise they can be compared.

While Ferrell was a very solid player with the team, the team elected to cut him. When the team cut Ferrell, they signed a 6’6 D-Leaguer, Spencer Dinwiddie. Many fans were upset with the move at the time, but obviously now things have changed. In a little more than a year since signing with the team, Dinwiddie has played some great basketball. He fits in the Nets’ system. The Nets’ roster currently possesses plenty of players with length, something Thomas or Ferrell don’t possess.

While the Nets team may certainly be able to effectively use Thomas, it will not be to the most of his potential. We’ve seen how in the Nets system Ferrell was good, but has done better in Dallas. It would be tough for the team to sign a player who is coming off an injury and isn’t really an ideal fit in their system.
