Brooklyn Nets: Pros and Cons of Isaiah Thomas signing
Pros: May land him for cheap due to injury and market
The team may land him for cheap due to many different factors. Teams will not have as much as they did the last two offseasons. This is something that Windhorst specifically points out. The salary cap with be close to flat this offseason after two straight years of jumps. Not many teams have cap space, and surprisingly the Nets have a good amount. Even after all the salary dump trades the teams made, it still can land one or two decent size free agents.
Also, his past injury is a concern. The hip injury he suffered last season has definitely hurt his value. As a result, he is just finally returning to the court at the halfway point of the season. But, Thomas will only have around 55 games including the playoffs to show that he still has it.
With that said, his half-season and playoff showing might not be enough for teams to bite on him. This would allow the Nets to get him for even cheaper than many feel he is already worth. With the talent that Thomas possess, if he can reach the level he was at just last year, he is well worth the money he will receive in free agency. So maybe in the long run, Thomas can be the veteran leader this franchise will need moving forward, and will come to the team for a cheap price tag.
