Albert King came to the New Jersey Nets in 1981 as the second of three first-round draft picks, taken from the University of Maryland with the 10th overall selection.

A part-time starter as a rookie, King averaged 12.1 points and 4.1 rebounds in 22.3 minutes per game on .482/3-for-13/.778 shooting.

He was thin for a wing, even for his era, at 6-foot-6 and 190 pounds, but came back in 1982-83 with the best year of his career. King averaged 17.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.2 steals in 31.0 minutes a game, posting a slash line of .475/.261/.775.

King went back to a part-time starter role in 1983-84, putting up 14.7 points, 4.9 boards, 2.6 dimes and 1.2 thefts in 26.6 minutes per game while shooting .492/.136/.786.

Slowed by injuries the following season, King played in only 42 games, but was productive as heck when he did play. He posted averages of 12.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.0 steals in just 20.5 minutes per game while shooting .491/0-for-8/.817.

Starting most of the time in 1985-86, King averaged 27.4 minutes and shot 456/.174/.823 in 73 games, posting 14.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists a night.

In the playoffs, King played in 21 games for the Nets in the decade and put yop 15.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals in 29.7 minutes a game, shooting .453/3-for-8/.730.

He played one more season in New Jersey before bouncing around to three NBA teams, the CBA and Israel over his final five pro seasons.

King’s 5,013 points were third for the Nets in the 1976-86 period and he was fifth with 1,681 rebounds.
