Brooklyn Nets: Breaking down Summer League roster
By Phil Watson
Shawn Dawson, SF-SG (2017-18 team: Bnei Herzliya, Israel)
Shawn Dawson has traveled a different path to the pros.
The son of American ex-pat Joe Dawson, who played professionally in Israel for more than 20 years, Dawson played five seasons with Maccabi Rishon LeZion before signing a two-year deal last summer with Beni Herzliya in his native country.
The 24-year-old swingman has decent size at 6-foor-6 and 205 pounds, but was undrafted in 2015.
He got a look from the New Orleans Pelicans in 2016, signing a deal after playing with the Washington Wizards’ Summer League entry that year. New Orleans cut Dawson after three brief preseason appearances and he spent all of last year back home in Israel.
In his first season with Bnei Herzliya, Dawson had the best numbers of his career thus far, averaging 15.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 32.2 minutes per game while shooting .458/.299/.712.
He’s more slasher than shooter, which could make him an awkward fit with the 3-point emphasis Brooklyn has on the offensive end. In his six pro seasons in Israel, Dawson is just a 31.7 percent shooter from long range, with his high-water mark at 34.3 percent in both 2015-16 and 2016-17.
Milton Doyle, SG (2017-18 teams: Long Island Nets, Brooklyn)
Milton Doyle will be returning for his second summer with the Brooklyn Nets in Las Vegas after joining the Nets of Summer last year as an undrafted free agent.
Doyle had a strong four games in Vegas, averaging 10.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in 16.4 minutes per game and shooting .567/5-for-10/3-for-5 and earning a contract and a training camp invitation.
He didn’t see any preseason action before being cut on Oct. 12 and signing with the Long Island Nets of the G-League, but his performance in Uniondale eventually earned him a two-way contract with Brooklyn in December.
Doyle played 45 games with Long Island, averaging 20.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.5 steals in 35.4 minutes per game on .418/.371/.778 shooting.
In 10 appearances with Brooklyn, Doyle put up 3.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 12.5 minutes a night while shooting .277/.174/4-for-8.
On Thursday, the Nets tendered the restricted free agent a qualifying offer, retaining the right to match an offer sheet the former Loyola of Chicago guard receives. If Doyle winds up signing the QO, he will return to the Nets on another two-way deal.
