P.J. Brown had been a solid player as a two-year starter at Louisiana Tech, averaging 12.7 points and 9.9 boards as a senior and falling into the early second round of the 1992 NBA Draft, where the New Jersey Nets made him the 29th overall selection.

Brown opted to sign with Panionios in Greece and averaged 17.0 points, 13.3 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game in the country’s top division, the HEBA A1.
The Nets signed Brown to a three-year, $2.4 million deal in June 1993, per the New York Times and as a rookie, Brown started 54 times in 79 games as a rookie, made 63 starts in 80 games in 1994-95 and in his third season became the regular center, starting 81 games.
In one playoff appearance with New Jersey in 1994, Brown played four games and started once while averaging 3.0 points and 2.0 rebounds in 14.0 minutes per game while shooting 2-for-9 and going 8-for-8 at the foul line.
Brown left New Jersey after the season to sign with the Miami Heat as a free agent and played 15 NBA seasons in all with the Nets, Heat, Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets, Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics, earning three All-Defensive selections and earning a ring with Boston in 2008.
In three years with the Nets, Brown averaged 8.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 30.7 minutes per game on .438/.178/.734 shooting, giving up some bulk as a center at 6-foot-11 and just 225 pounds.
