Eyes on the future

Beyond this season, however, is a giant question mark. Having Carroll return to the team at the end of the year would make for a very good recruiting tool.

Success stories like DeMarre Carroll, Joe Harris and Spencer Dinwiddie will no doubt play a role in the 2019 offseason, or at the very least garner some interest.

More from Nothin' But Nets

If Sean Marks needed an ambassador for the rebranding of the Nets organization, DeMarre Carroll would be the face of his propaganda:

A fashionable, down-on-his-luck journeyman resurrects his career with a downtrodden team with hard work and personal (and financial) investment by his coaches and staff.

Imagine Mighty Ducks meets Any Given Sunday, except with basketball. I can’t be the only smelling an Oscar for this movie, am I?

However, there is also the possibility that he isn’t there at the start of next season. Zach Lowe on his podcast, The Lowe Post Podcast, speculated that one person who could possibly be on the move toward the end of next season is DeMarre Carroll, if the team underperforms.

He argued that a team like Houston, a playoff team that may need one more shooter, could take a flyer on a player like Carroll.

A 3-and-D spark-plug player at the end of their contract would be a low-risk, high-reward type of gamble. He still plays at a high level on both offense and defense and another healthy, productive year will undoubtedly attract playoff teams.

In return, the Nets can possibly get another draft asset that they can use in a package or to add to the war chest while hunting for the big fish of the 2019 offseason. If his play doesn’t attract suitors in the league, his fashion sense will definitely get their attention.

Regardless of whether the Nets keep him for the long haul after the season or left him go, DeMarre Carroll’s final year with the Nets can affect the course of this franchise for the future.
