It was a record night for points at the San Diego Sports Arena on Valentine’s Day in 1975.

The defending champion New York Nets brought a 40-14 record and four days off into the game, while the San Diego Conquistadors had dropped eight straight games and were just 21-37.

More from Nothin' But Nets

The ABA was often known for its wide-open style of play, but even that didn’t account for the track meet that ensued.

The Nets led 36-33 after one quarter and 67-61 at the half before the Q’s exploded for a 45-point outburst in the third period to take a 106-100 edge into the fourth period.

New York fought back to force overtime at 129-129, but the fun was just beginning.

The teams raced to 30 points in the first extra session and remained tied, 144-144. The pace slowed a bit in the next two extra periods, but it was 161-161 as the weary clubs headed to overtime No. 4.

San Diego finally pulled away and secured a 176-166 victory, as the teams set a new ABA record for most points in a game at 342.

Julius Erving led the scoring parade, dropping in a career-high 63 in a whopping 66 minutes, hitting 25-of-46 from the floorand 13-of-19 at the line to go with 23 rebounds and eight assists. Brian Taylor added 26 points for the Nets, who had six players in double figures.

Bo Lamar paced the Q’s with 45 points, Travis Grant added 30, Lee Davis scored 25 (in just 20 minutes) and Warren Jabali tossed in 22.
