Cleveland Cavaliers

Cap status: Over by $29.6 million

Expiring contracts: J.R. Smith ($14.7 million, plus non-guaranteed $15.7 million for 2019-20), Alec Burks ($11.5 million), Rodney Hood ($3.5 million), Channing Frye ($1.5 million), David Nwaba ($1.5 million)

The money works in an Alec Burks-Kenneth Faried deal. Burks was acquired from the Utah Jazz by the Cavaliers on Nov. 29, so his salary can’t be aggregated in a trade until Jan. 29, but there are no restrictions if he is the only player swapped.

Burks played the hero for the Cavaliers in their 99-97 victory at Barclays Center on Dec. 3, when he beat Allen Crabbe off the dribble and Spencer Dinwiddie was a step late in rotating, opening a lane for Burks to dunk the Cavs to a win with 3.2 seconds remaining.

But Burks is not doing very well for Cleveland. In 11 games since coming to the Cavs, Burks is averaging 11 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, but is shooting a ghastly 33.3 percent overall and 30.2 percent from 3-point range.

He’s also played more than 64 games in a season just once, when he played in 78 way back in 2013-14, so there’s an injury history to consider.

J.R. Smith? Yes, he has a ring. He also has shown the basketball IQ of a kumquat in critical situations.  (Pro tip: When in a close game in the NBA Finals, it is very important to know whether your team is ahead, tied or behind.)
