Brooklyn Nets: 15 best draft picks of all-time (updated through 2018-19)
By Phil Watson
Brooklyn native Albert King was never a superstar in the NBA, as was older brother Bernard, but he gave the New Jersey Nets six solid seasons as a starter and reserve at the small forward slot after being taken 10th overall out of Maryland by the Nets in the 1981 NBA Draft.
King wasn’t the first player chosen by the Nets in that draft — heck, he wasn’t even the first Terrapin chosen by the Nets, as he was New Jersey’s second first-round pick in 1981 behind No. 3 overall choice Buck Williams.
King’s best season with the Nets came in 1982-83, when he averaged 17.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 31.0 minutes per game, starting 75 of his 79 appearances.
He was a double-digit scorer in five of his six seasons with the Nets and finished his time with New Jersey averaging 13.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 25.3 minutes a game while shooting 47.1 percent and starting 271 games.
In November 1987, King signed with the Philadelphia 76ers and went on to play with the San Antonio Spurs and Washington Bullets in his final three NBA seasons, sandwiching in a year in Israel and a season in the old Continental Basketball Association in there as well.
King only shows up on two of the franchise’s all-time lists, ranked seventh in personal fouls and eighth in turnovers.
