Brooklyn Nets: 15 best draft picks of all-time (updated through 2018-19)
By Phil Watson
Say hello to the second Brooklyn Nets pick to make this list, a pick acquired in one of general manager Sean Marks‘ early trades.
Jarrett Allen was selected 22nd overall in the 2017 NBA Draft with a pick acquired from the Washington Wizards in a trade that sent free-agent-to-be Bojan Bogdanovic and 2015 first-round selection Chris McCullough to the nation’s capital.
The big man’s draft stock plummeted because some talent evaluators questioned his dedication to the game, in part because he has interests outside of basketball.
Allen earned the starting center role late in his rookie season and expanded his game in 2018-19, playing in 80 games and increasing his minutes load to from 20.0 to 26.2 per game.
In two seasons in Brooklyn, Allen has averaged 9.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 23.3 minutes per game, shooting 59 percent overall. His deep shooting is a work in progress at 18.3 percent in less than one attempt every two games.
Allen finished 12th in the NBA in blocks at 1.5 per game in 2018-19 and was in the top 10 in field goal percentage at 59 percent. He was also 20th in the NBA with 191 offensive rebounds.
In the advanced metrics, Allen was ninth in block percentage and 14th in defensive box plus/minus.
Allen has enough attempts now to rank second in franchise history in field-goal percentage, behind only the late Darryl Dawkins’ mark of 60.1 percent.
