Brooklyn Nets: Evaluating Houston Rockets fire sale possibilities
By Phil Watson
P.J. Tucker
Now 34 years old, P.J. Tucker is low in terms of NBA mileage after playing five years abroad early in his career, but he has evolved into a very handy modern-day small-ball 4 at 6-foot-6 and a hulking 245 pounds.
Tucker still has enough quickness to guard bigger wings on the perimeter and the bulk to bang with bigs in the paint, but he shot just 39.6 percent overall and 37.7 percent from 3-point range on 4.7 attempts per game this season, averaging 7.3 points and 5.8 boards in a career-high 34.2 minutes per game.
He would bring veteran leadership and a hard-nosed edge to any team, but he’s also on the books for two more years at $16.32 million, which is a big chunk of salary to take on for an aging role player who will be 36 at the end of this contract.
Brooklyn could probably get just about the same impact by retaining Jared Dudley, a year younger and much more efficient at keeping the ball moving on the offensive end, while retaining a player who already knows the culture and the system the Nets employ.
