NBA Mock Draft 2.0: Narrowing down the picks after lottery, combine
By Phil Watson
Bol Bol is a prospect that has been all over various draft boards with great size for a big at 7-foot-2 with a 7-foot-5 wingspan, making him smaller than his NBA center father, the late Manute Bol.
But as a basketball player, Bol grew up with the game and is much more polished offensively than his father ever was, averaging 21.0 points per game on 56.1 percent shooting overall and an impressive 52.0 percent on 2.8 3-point attempts per game in nine games as a freshman at Oregon.
But his stock slid a bit after he broke his left foot and had season-ending surgery in January.
However, a 7-foot-2 rim protector who can hit runners and floaters and step out to the 3-point line with ease makes him a huge potential upside pick because he’s big and skilled already.
If he has an NBA comparison, it might be Kristaps Porzingis, with a similar combination of height, slight build and skill set.
There are some red flags, as he developed a reputation for inconsistent effort as a high school player and showing some reluctance to work hard at major events he’s attended.
That could be as simple as a maturity issue or it could be an indicator of a long-term trend. That’s the dice roll teams face with Bol. With the Timberwolves already having a pretty solid center in the fold in Karl-Anthony Towns, they can afford to wait for Bol to develop.
