156. . PG. Vanderbilt. Darius Garland. 5. player

If it seems odd that the Cleveland Cavaliers might consider using a lottery pick to take their point guard of the future after selecting presumed point guard of the future Collin Sexton just a year ago, it just might be.

Garland, despite missing most of his freshman season at Vanderbilt with a knee injury, has not seen his stock fall tremendously as a result.

He might be the best ball-handler in this draft class and can create his own shot seemingly at will in iso situations. But he also is adept at setting up passing lanes with the dribble and has adequate length with a 6-foot-5 wingspan at 6-foot-2.

If there is a red flag starched in a strong wind with Garland, it is this: In his five games with Vanderbilt, he had 13 assists and 15 turnovers. Point guards with negative assist-to-turnover ratios rarely turn out well.

Considering Sexton averaged only 3.0 assists and 2.3 turnovers for the Cavs as a rookie, Garland’s small-sample size of 2.6 assists and 3.0 turnovers doesn’t feel necessarily like an upgrade at the point and there is also a question of whether a team can win with a pair of 6-foot-2 guards at the defensive end.
