NBA Mock Draft 2.0: Narrowing down the picks after lottery, combine
By Phil Watson
A leading contender for the Elfrid Payton Best Hair at the NBA Draft honor, Coby White also brings a lot of game to the table for the rebuilding Hawks.
He’s a blur at 6-foot-5 and a thin 185 pounds and can play either guard spot, which would allow White to get some backup minutes behind Trae Young at the 1 for Atlanta as well as spelling Kevin Huerter at the 2 as Atlanta gets younger and more athletic.
White is better as a creator for himself than as a playmaker for others and can play out of control at times at the offensive end, averaging 2.7 turnovers per game as a freshman for the Tar Heels.
But his 3-point stroke looks solid and translatable to the longer NBA line and can score at the rim, in the mid-range and from deep.
His speed and quickness can be a double-edged sword at times; the accuracy of his passes tends to decrease as his speed increases or when he is moving more quickly than things are actually developing. Patience will be a skill White needs to learn.
