Brooklyn Nets should bring back Vince Carter for 1 last run
By Akbar Best
The Brooklyn Nets will have needs beyond stars in free agency. They should take a shot at bringing back franchise icon Vince Carter for his final season.
Free agency is like a Game of Thrones’ winter. It’s coming. This is the moment we have been waiting for. Through all the highs and lows, comebacks and collapses, cheers and cries, it was all for this upcoming moment. The Brooklyn Nets are going to chase stars this summer.

But free agency isn’t solely about the big names. Every team needs a valuable bench and role players to act as glue guys. They are what truly keep teams together. They are the Night’s Watch when the night is dark and full of terrors.
When a star is hurt, or subs out or just doesn’t have it that night, their importance cannot be overstated. I also cannot overstate how great it would be to bring back Vince Carter for one last stint with the Nets. So I’ll list my reasons and then get into them. Here they are:
- Contract
- Fan favorite
- Could retire a Net
- Contributes on the court
- Veteran presence, leadership
Contract
OK, let’s get the easier ones out the way. Vince will be playing his last year next season. He just played for the Atlanta Hawks on a cheap contract — a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal at $2.93 million — and was productive within his role. The Brooklyn Nets can have the same thing here.
With the moves the Nets are going to be potentially involved with, a lot of cap space is going to be tied up. Cap holds for the rookies, D’Angelo Russell and his cap hold, trying to max a star or two. The Nets will be tight for cash while trying to get their affairs in order.
Carter is a fan favorite
During his time in New Jersey, Vince Carter was definitely a fan favorite. Part of a dynamic offense that the Nets ran through those years, his spectacular dunks and big moments had fans out of their seats. It was amazing how his hang time left us captivated in suspended disbelief.
Some of the greatest dunks ever happened with him in that Nets jersey (hi, Alonzo). And that’s not to only call him a dunker. He was also a big shot maker for us in closing moment of close games. I’m sure Nets fans would rejoice to have Vinsanity back for one more go.
