Gray shows some skills

The Brooklyn Nets took a 16-player roster to Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League, but of the nine players that are currently free agents and looking for a chance to go to training camp with someone, only three got playing time on Friday.

Josh Gray, undrafted in 2016 out of LSU, got the most run, starting at the point guard spot and logging 25 minutes.

Gray, who played on two 10-day contracts with the Phoenix Suns in 2017-18 before spending last season in South Korea, had a strong first half, but faded a bit in the second.

He finished with 14 points on 4-of-11 shooting, hitting 1-of-3 from deep, Gray did have a huge set of free throws with 24.5 seconds left after he was fouled by Cameron Payne on a 3-pointer. Gray hit all three of his free throws to pull Brooklyn to within 93-92.

He also had five rebounds, three assists and two steals to go with two turnovers and a block and had one outstanding defensive sequence in the first half.

Switched onto the much bigger Isaiah Roby after a screen, Gray never backed down and didn’t let Roby get inside. He swatted at the ball, forcing Roby to readjust twice, before Roby settled for a fadeaway jumper that was off the mark.

Undrafted rookie Ahmed Hill out of Virginia Tech played 12 minutes and had six points, completing a four-point play while going 2-for-4 overall and 1-of-2 from deep. He had a rebound and a turnover.

Center Amida Brimah, who has played the last two seasons with the G-League’s Austin Spurs, had a dunk and a massive block in eight minutes.

Brimah also had a rebound and a turnover on an illegal screen.

In all, it was a typical Summer League game — moments of wow surrounded by stretches of choppy play.
