1975-76 Julius Erving
29.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.9 blocks per game, 50.7 field-goal percentage
Julius Erving had a terrific run in both the ABA and NBA, as he’s won championships with the then-New York Nets and Philadelphia 76ers, respectively.
Coming over from the Virginia Squires, the Roosevelt native returned to his home area in 1973 and spent just three seasons with the franchise. Dr. J made the most of his time on Long Island though; coming away with three straight MVP awards, two championships, two scoring titles, and was named to the 1976 ABA All-Defensive First Team.
His third and final season with the team proved to be the best of his Nets tenure, as Erving put up his best second-best ABA point per game average (he put up 31.9 ppg with Virginia in 1972-73), and led the Nets to their second championship in three years.
Erving’s legendary status really took off in the NBA though, as he earned five All-NBA First Team and two Second Team selections, an MVP in 1981, a championship in 1983 and 11 All-Star selections.
Dr. J was known for his amazing dunks and all-around performance on both ends of the floor as the numbers say, but over the course of his career, he has also proven to be a winner and accomplished pretty much everything you would want from him during his time donning the red, white and blue striped and stars jersey. Erving is currently responsible for the only championship success in Nets history.
Erving ultimately had to be sacrificed in order for the Nets to move into the NBA because of the expansion fee, but most, if not all Nets fans would’ve loved to see that situation play out differently.
