While most people in the NBA community are looking externally for the Nets’ next head coach, it would be unwise to overlook the guy who is leading the team in the present day.

Jacque Vaughn took over the Nets head coaching job in March, and in the very small sample size fans have seen, the team went 2-0, including an impressive win in Los Angeles over the Lakers.

Vaughn’s first head coaching experience was not very successful to say the least. He spent two and a half seasons in Orlando where the team never cracked a win total higher than 23. After his firing in 2015, Vaughn became the top assistant for the Nets in the fall of 2016 and has been in Brooklyn since, as he quickly became the top man for Kenny Atkinson.

What will really dictate if Jacque Vaughn is a legitimate head coaching candidate is how the team performs during the NBA restart in Orlando. Out of everyone in the organization, Vaughn may have the most to gain if things can go right for the Nets when the season resumes.

If Brooklyn rolls over in the playoffs, or if they somehow fall to the 9 seed, Vaughn will go back to being just an assistant. But if the California native is able to get the most out of his team (while winning a few playoff games along the way), he may just be able to force the Nets’ hand and give him the head coaching job…without the interim title this time.
