Nets: Jacque Vaughn appears to be getting real chance to win BK job

Nets interim HC Jacque Vaughn is getting a real chance to win the coaching job.
The consensus opinion in the wake of Kenny Atkinson’s surprising dismissal back in March was that the Brooklyn Nets would bring in a high-profile head coach to manage a roster led by ego-laden superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.
As evidenced by their links to Spurs boss Gregg Popovich and Clippers assistant Tyronn Lue, the Nets are obviously still keen on doing just that. However, following their performance in the NBA bubble, the franchise is also forced to consider more of an unknown commodity for the vacant position.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, interim head coach Jacque Vaughn formally interviewed for the job on Tuesday and he reportedly impressed the front office.
"“Vaughn, who led the Nets to a 5-3 record in the Orlando NBA restart and the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, remains a significant candidate in the Nets’ search process and has left a great impression on ownership,” wrote Charania.“The Nets appear to want Vaughn back with the franchise in some capacity, whether or not he gets the head coaching job — and the momentum around his candidacy has been consistent.”"
It’s extremely refreshing to hear that Vaughn is getting a serious look at the permanent job. The Nets had next to nothing to play for in Orlando, as their decimated roster was always going to lead to a swift playoff exit. However, the 45-year-old clearly motivated the team to end its season on a high note, as our undermanned squad finished ahead of the Magic and clinched the No. 7 seed in the East.
His most notable feats in the bubble included monster upsets over the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers, two of the undisputed best teams in the NBA, as well as taking the Portland Trail Blazers, who were fighting for their playoff lives at the time, to the literal brink of elimination.
Even if Vaughn doesn’t win the job — only somebody like Popovich or (maybe) Lue winning should prevent that from happening — fans in Brooklyn can at least take solace in the fact that the Nets are doing right by him in giving him a real shot.
It’s nothing less than Vaughn deserved, so that’s really all you could ask for.
