Nets star Kyrie Irving is spending his PTO campaigning with Cynthia Nixon.

Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving’s personal leave from the team has been the subject of widespread criticism and scrutiny of late, as his appearance at a maskless birthday party has some questioning the true nature of his absence. Irving is showing that he isn’t just living it up in the wee hours of the night, as he was putting his political activism cap on during Brooklyn’s comeback victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Irving, who went by the pseudonym of “Kai Irving”, hopped on a Zoom call for Tahanie Aboushi, a Democratic candidate for Manhattan district attorney. Also on the call was Cynthia Nixon, the actress of “Sex and the City” fame who ran for governor of New York against Andrew Cuomo in 2018. Both women have been longtime advocates of women’s rights and LGBTQ+ rights, issues that are clearly very important to Irving.

Fighting for societal reform and social justice is a more worthwhile use of Kyrie Irving’s time than partying.

Irving’s 27.1 points and 6.1 assists per game show that during his brief spurts on the court, he has looked every bit like the game-changing dynamo Nets fans were promised. Unfortunately, due to rest and this extended leave, Irving hasn’t been on the floor as much as everyone expected.

Anyone who knows anything about Irving knows that he is a very socially-conscious individual, as evidenced by his willingness to speak his mind on a multitude of hot-button topics, then back up his opinions with charitable donations. Nets fans want to see No. 11 back on the court soon, but he clearly values making a change in this fashion as much as he does scoring 30 points a night in the NBA.

If Irving is using the bulk of his time off to fight for positive change in his community, like this call suggests, this could be a very productive break in the big picture. If he’s using it to attend birthday parties, he’s opening himself up to criticism.
