Kyrie Irving is helping out the family of George Floyd.
Kyrie Irving isn’t the most beloved player in the NBA at the moment, as the entire basketball world is wondering why Irving has only suited up in seven games this season after taking an extended leave from the Brooklyn Nets. What has been made clear of late is that Kyrie thinks of himself as equal parts basketball player and social justice advocate, as evidenced by his generous donation to the family of George Floyd.
On a podcast with former NBA player turned writer and activist Etan Thomas, Stephen Jackson, who was good friends with Floyd, confirmed that Irving helped buy the family a house in the aftermath of the protests that sparked from Floyd’s death.
Jackson also said that Barbara Streisand gifted his daughter, Gianna, stock in Disney, while rapper Lil Baby paid for Gianna’s birthday party.
Kyrie Irving has shown that he is a very socially conscious individual.
On top of his frequent vocal support of the Native American community and women’s athletics, Irving has shown that advocating for social justice is near and dear to his heart. Irving cited the Floyd protests as one of the reasons he skipped out on the NBA bubble restart, and even chose to immortalize this moment in history by producing a documentary about the life and death of Breonna Taylor.
As much praise as his on-court accomplishments will garner, Irving clearly values what he does off the basketball court, and acts like this out of the kindness of his heart speak to what he holds in high regard.
Kyrie has incurred a lot of heat over the last few years for some peculiar behavior, but something that is inarguable about him is the fact that he is both extremely aware of the problems plaguing our society and willing to be very philanthropic if it means he can bring some positivity into the world.
Nets: Joe Harris could benefit the most from KD-Kyrie-Harden big three
Joe Harris could be in line for a huge spike in production, as the attention teams will put on KD and Harden could leave Harris in line for wide-open shots.
