5 best scorers in Brooklyn Nets history
2. Buck Williams
In the 1981 draft, New Jersey chose Buck Williams with the No. 3 pick. In his rookie season, he averaged 34.5 minutes per game, 15.5 points, and 12.3 rebounds. That year, he was named an All-Star (the first in the history of the team) and won the Rookie of the Year award. Williams helped the Nets make it to their second playoff appearance in 1982, the first of five straight.
In his second season, Williams averaged 17 points and was named to the All-NBA Second Team.
His career high came during the 1987-88 season when he averaged 18.3 points per game. At the end of that year, he was voted to the All-Defensive Team, proving that he excelled on both ends of the floor.
Williams only missed one game in his first six seasons with New Jersey. He never averaged fewer than 33 minutes per game and only missed a total of 21 games over eight years. On top of that, he shot at least 52% from the floor.
But on June 24, 1989, Williams was traded to Portland. To this day, it’s regarded as one of the best trades in Trail Blazers history.
He averaged 16.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and shot 55% from the floor in a franchise-record 635 games. His No. 52 jersey hangs from the rafters of the Barclays Center.
From 1981-1989, Williams scored 10,440 points.
Williams retired from the NBA on Jan. 27, 1999, after 17 seasons.
