 2. Reggie Lewis

Drafted: June 22, 1987 by the Boston Celtics

Thursday will mark 30 years to the day when the Celtics used the 22nd selection to draft a lanky small forward who played college ball for Boston-based Northeastern University, far from a college basketball powerhouse.

After six seasons with the Celtics, including back-to-back campaigns of averaging over 20 points-per-game, Lewis was poised to follow Larry Bird and carry the torch as the next Celtic great.

Then, tragedy struck. While practicing his skill on a basketball court at Brandeis University in the summer of 1993, Lewis succumbed to a fatal heart attack. A would-be Hall of Fame career cut short at just 27 years old.

Drafting a player with the ability of Lewis will greatly accelerate the Nets rebuilding plan.
