NBA Rumors: Knicks could swipe Andre Drummond from Nets
The Cleveland Cavaliers are dying to find a trade partner for Andre Drummond, but at this point it doesn’t seem like another team is going to bite.
That leaves them with a last-resort buyout option, and reports have suggested the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets are among the favorites to sign the veteran big man if that’s the route Cleveland takes.
But as we know, the Nets and Lakers can only offer Drummond a limited role and a veteran minimum contract. Perhaps that’s a move he wants to make if he’s looking to secure a ring. That’d be understandable.
Then there’s the prospect of joining an up-and-coming team and getting paid way more money without having to wait until the offseason. That’s where the New York Knicks come in.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Knicks have reportedly explored a scenario where they’d sign Drummond to a multi-year deal if he’s cut loose by the Cavs. It’s unclear how likely that is, but any somewhat enticing scenario for the four-time rebounds leader could hurt the Nets’ chances.
Could the Knicks steal Andre Drummond from the Nets?
The 27-year-old is making $27 million this year and stands to cash in on another big contract if he hits the open market. But if the Knicks give him a deal of that magnitude with months left in the season, he might be inclined to take it and insure himself. There’s always the risk of injury.
Also, Drummond would have a full-time role on the Knicks. Perhaps they’d be willing to trade Mitchell Robinson for assets and keep Nerlens Noel as the backup after adding the nine-year veteran, which could put them in an even better position to contend in the next few years.
Right now they’re 20-20 and seemed primed for a playoff spot. They’re also looking to make a splash for a star at the trade deadline. It all depends on what Drummond prefers, but we’d be lying if we said the Knicks didn’t offer him a completely different enticing situation to mull over.
Maybe they’ll take a seat and let us have him. After all, we’re running New York at the moment.
